Berea Residence soccer team won the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Applied Science Soccer Tournament by default after Baltimore Residence refused to allow Berea to take the penalty at Curries Fountain Sports Ground on Saturday.
Berea was given a penalty after their striker was brought down in the box and Baltimore didn’t go with the referee’s decision as they argued that the player was fouled outside the box.
After waiting for more than 30 minutes as Baltimore refused to give Berea their chance to kick the penalty, the tournament referee later then decided to give Berea the title.
On their way to the final, Mwelase’s boys beat Seaboard by a goal to nil in the tough encounter and Baltimore on the other hand smashed Campbell Residence by 2-1 to book their place in the final.
In the final, both teams took the game to each other as they were creating good scoring chances but it went to halftime with both teams failing to open a score line.
Baltimore suffered a major blow as Mthokozisi Zulu who was a crucial part in their previous encounters, suffered a knee injury and couldn’t continue.
Berea Res Coach Sbani Mwelase said that it felt great as they have been looking forward to three years to win such an encounter with great teams like your Seaboard and Baltimore.
“It’s a motivation to the boys; they have been trying all along since the beginning of the year but these are the results they worked hard since we all know they have just had like seven months playing as a team but the combination is amazing,” said a delighted Mwelase.
Mwelase also pointed out that during the tournament, they had some weaknesses there and there but they were able to cover up.
“What makes me even happier is that we never considered a goal in the whole tournament, I’m just over the moon about the guy’s performance,” concluded Mwelase.
Berea Res won a brand new soccer kit, medals and R1 000.
