Burkina Faso was drawn with Algeria at home first in the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup play-offs at the Cairo headquarters of the Confederation of African Football on Monday.
Burkina Faso has never played in the World Cup before and they will be looking to make their debut in Brazil. The country is currently ranked number 51 in the World FIFA rankings.
The Stallions were the runners up of the 2013 AFCON after being beaten by Nigeria in the final earlier this year.
Burkina Faso coach Paul Put believes that both sides have the chance of representing Africa next year. “I agree that Algeria are a great side but I can tell you that the chances are equal for both sides at this level of the World Cup qualifying,” Put said after the draw on Supersport website.
The Western Africa side coach also mentioned that they have to prepare for the clash against the Northern Africa country. “It’s a balanced draw and in Algeria we will face a big football nation so that means we have to do our homework in preparing for these two big games of our lives.
Burkina Faso players have been active in preparations and we hope to take it from there and build on the self- belief we have got from reaching this stage and also reaching AFCON 2013 finals. This will motivate us to try harder to reach our first World Cup final,” Put added.
The two sides have met before in the friendly encounter and Algeria won the match by 2-0.
In other games Ivory Coast will host Senegal, Ethiopia will welcome Nigeria, Tunisia will play Cameroon meanwhile the two African dangerous sides will play head-to-head as Ghana will welcome Egypt.
The matches will be played between 11-15 October 2013 and 15-19 November 2013.
