Chiefs edge Bucs to book a TKO semi-final spot
Kaizer Chiefs defeated their Soweto arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 4-2 in a Soweto derby on penalties in a Telkom knockout quarter-final match, in Moses Mabhida stadium, Durban.
The much-anticipated Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates finally arrived on Saturday 2, November. Amakhosi took charge of the game as they threatened the Bucs in the early stages of the match, Amakhosi thought they have broken the deadlock but Samir Nurkovic’s headerfrom Khama Billiat’s cross was ruled offside in the 21st minute. Moments later Amakhosi defence were caught napping and Buccaneers capitalised on that as Thembinkosi Lorch set up Fortune Makaringe for the Bucs opener.
In the second stanza Amakhosi piled up the pressure on ten men Bucs, and it eventually paid off as Billiat’s efforts hit the post and Learnado Castro slotted home the rebound.
The sides could not be separated from regulation time, the match went to extra time. Chiefs took control of the game in the early stages of the extra time as they were awarded a penalty after Erick Mathoho’s shot was blocked by Abel Mabaso and Daniel Cardoso converted it home in the fourth minute of extra time nicely.
Pirates did not show any signs of giving up though, Bucs hit back in the tenth minute after a magnificent display from Thembinkosi Lorch set up yet again this time Gabadinho Mhango whose powerful shot went past Daniel Akpeyi. The match did not find the winner again this time on extra time, it went to penalty-shootout. Amakhosi’s Akpeyi proved to be a hero for the home side as he saved two penalties and Chiefs did not make any mistakes from their penalties as they advanced to the Semi-finals.
In other results, Maritzburg United defeated Highlands Park 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw on Friday night in Harry GwalaStadium, Golden Arrows defeated SuperSports United 1- 0 through Lindokuhle Mbatha’s well taken free-kick on a Saturday night, in Mbombela Stadium. On Sunday, Mamelodi Sundowns edged Chippa United 4-3 on penalties, in Nelson Mandela bay.
