Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans continue to rally behind their teams in this year’s Carling Black Label Cup match which will be played at the FBN Stadium in July.
The competition allows fans to choose their line-up by voting for their favourite players. A fan from each team will be chosen to be the coach on the game day. So far, more than 11 million votes have been casted.
Both teams are starting to take shape with ample time for players who are currently not in pole position to make late advancements, but it all boils down to the champion coaches’ selections.
Benni McCarthy’s retirement means he won’t be available for Pirates. On the Chiefs’ side, Jimmy Tau won’t be available after parting-ways with the club. The club also announced that left back and centre back, Jimmy Jambo and Morgan Gould, will not recover from their long-term injuries in time to play in the match.
Chiefs’ goalkeeper and Absa Premiership Player of the Season 2012/23, Itumeleng Khune is leading by over 1.3 million votes so far. Given his current votes, he can easily bit 2.2 million votes mark, he attained last year.
According to a statement released by Carling Black Label on Tuesday, Siboniso Gaxa is the incumbent right-back, with Tsepo Masilela on the left. Erick Mathoho is the clear favourite among the centre-backs, and as things stand he will be joined by Tefu Mashamaite.
Siphiwe Tshabalala is leading midfilders, whilst Bernard Parker is leading strikers.
Meanwhile, Pirates’ fans have so far voted Senzo Meyiwa as their goalkeeper, though not by a huge margin from Moeneeb Josephs.
Happy Jele is in at right-back, with Thabo Matlaba on the left. The centre-back pairing is at this stage Siyabonga Sangweni and Lucky Lekgwathi. Rooi Mahamutsa, who returned from long-term injury towards the end of last season, is also pushing for a place.
Oupa Manyisa is currently leading midfielders whilst Collins Mbesuma is leading strikers.
“If either set of Champion Coaches want to make changes to their side ahead of the 2013 Carling Black Label Cup, they can vote for other star players by dialing *120*764*.
“They must then enter their unique code found on the underside of the bottle cap and… and can then choose the team they would like to manage and the players they would like to see start. The voting is free of charge to the public,” statement said.
Supporters who cast their votes can win great prizes, including a share of R3-million worth of airtime and match tickets.
Pirates are the defending champions.
