Chiefs slips up late in the season
Kaizer Chiefs dealt another major blow to their league run after losing to Bidvest Wits yesterday, at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.
The Clever Boys continued their unbeaten streak in the ABSA: Premier Soccer League (PSL) to nine matches when they defeated Chiefs 1-0.
Chiefs had double of the attempts at goal than Wits but the winning goal came from Cameroonian Eva Nga who was a substitute and netted in his goal in the 93rd minute of stoppage-time.
The loss meant that Chiefs have only managed to collect 4 points out of a possible 15. The points dropped by the Glamour boys yesterday meant they could not stretch their lead at the top of the log, granting 2nd place Mamelodi Sundowns, an opportunity to surpass them. Sundowns had a game in hand and only needed a draw or win in their game later the same against Baroka FC.
Chiefs were fortunate as Sundowns also lost to Baroka, 0-1 courtesy of Namibian Ananias Gebhardt. Sundowns not being able to capitalize on the Chiefs’ loss, left them level pegging with the Glamour boys at 53 points each but Chiefs stayed on top of the log as Sundowns were lagging behind on goal difference. Chiefs have managed to keep their lead in the PSL because of the goal difference (GD) of 20, which is 5 goals more than Sundowns’ GD.
The coach of the losing team,Ernst Middendorp came to the defense of his players when interviewed by SuperSport.
When he was asked about the disappointing game after having many chances at scoring a goal, he replied, “I don’t agree it was not a disappointing game, the mentality. It’s not the greatest football, it’s not what we are talking about it’s a disaster result. If you see the 90 minutes.”
Adding that he hopes his players can be put in the right mentality for their next fixture, against Chippa United.
