The second annual Gauteng Football Cup was launched on Wednesday. Kaizer Chief, University of Pretoria, and Bloemfontein Celtic will be participants of this year’s edition, on the 21 July in Pretoria at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The launch took place at the Premier Soccer League headquarters in Parktown. According to Soccer Laduma, it was revealed that the defending champions, Kaizer Chiefs, will face the winner between Tuks and Celtics in the final.
As this is the most highly anticipated competition, both teams in the semi-final are determined to reach the final stage.
Chiefs are also focused in securing the title, while getting warmed up for the anticipated Black Label Cup on the 27 of July against their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.
Looking at this competition last year, it was a four-team tournament. However, for 2013 they came up with a new foot where the champions will only play in the final stages.
Super Diski reported the Gauteng MEC for Sport, Lebogang Mayile said, “They are very happy to keep hosting the tournament in Gauteng. I also hope to see more teams compete in such tournaments.”
“What is important for us as Gauteng provincial government is to continue supporting our teams in their developments. We hope to see the tournament grow every year, we have three good teams this season and we will see a great tournament for this year.”
Teams’ coaches, Stuart Baxter, Clinton Larsen and Steve Barker will be kindly treating this cup tournament as their preparation for 2013/14 season, hoping to have a good start against their rivals.
