CITY OF DURBAN WINS IT FOR AFRICA

The city of Durban was awarded with a historic achievement when they were announced officially as the host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand.
With Canadian City, Edmonton having withdrawn earlier this year; South Africa became the only bidder for these games.
The Commonwealth Games Federation were impressed with the city of Durban when they inspected it earlier this month.
The outgoing Commonwealth Games Federation President Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar confirmed the good news and congratulated Durban for working tirelessly in making
sure that they reach this far.
“Our friends from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa are now prime to make the most of that responsibility and opportunity. It gives me a great pleasure to welcome the
South African city of Durban as proud hosts of the 2022,” said Ja’afar.
He also said that as the Commonwealth Games movement, they’ll stand together to support these games, touching African soil for the first time.
The decision came after a short briefing of the last and final presentation by the Durban’sbidding committee in Auckland earlier Wednesday.
The mayor of EThekwini Municipality, Councillor James Nxumalo said that the city is always ready for any event and have a good track record in hosting.
“We are looking forward to hosting you in true African style in year 2022; Durban is ready to show what is in store,” said Nxumalo.
As for Phumzile Masondo who is a student Journalist at Icesa College, Durban’s win of the bid means that investigations are yet to come.
“I believe that as much as most countries are happy for Africa’s win, but I still feel that developed countries would still want to drag down the name of South Africa following the
bribery scandal of the world cup in 2010,” said Masondo.
South Africa becomes the first country in Africa to host both the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup.
The games are set to commence on the 18th until the 30th of July 2022, with the commencement day which happens to be Mandela’s birthday and an important day for the
