A well-taken goal from outside the 18-yard area by Menzi Ndwandwe was the highlight of the day when Durban Warriors overcame City Lads 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
The game was played on a wet pitch and it was inside the first half that a clumsy tackle from a City defender gifted Ndwandwe his first goal from the penalty spot.
The Eastern Cape outfit equalised with a goal from their captain, Nkululeko Shekinfe before Ndwandwe brought all the spectators to their feet with his second goal of the match.
The game was played over three halves as both teams look to step up their fitness ahead of the start of the ABC Motsepe League.
South African football legend Delron Buckley and Durban Warriors head coach said that the interest was not on winning or losing.
“Preseason fitness, the patterns of play, the communication and all that stuff we have worked on in training was for me more important than winning the game,” said Buckley.
City Lads Head Coach, Motloasi Hlaudi, said that he brought his team to Durban so they can be exposed to different styles of play and atmospheres.
“I think the atmosphere got the better of my players because they are not used to play outside Eastern Cape,” said Hlaudi.
Menzi Ndwandwe, who had an impressive game, said that he hopes to score more than 28 goals this season and help his team win promotion to the National First Division league.
“Last season I played eight games and scored 15 goals if I can stay fit all season I’m sure I can reach my target,” said Ndwandwe.
Buckley also believes Ndwandwe can score 28 goals more as he said Ndwandwe can do it, he has one the best coaches behind him.
The 2016/2017 ABC Motsepe League is scheduled to start on the second week of September.
