DUT DERBY ENDS IN A WIN FOR HOSTS

It was a hard fought battle for the teams to win the first DUT derby of 2013. Both the Durban University of Technology teams had a point to prove, at a semi-full stadium of Indumiso Campus on Saturday.
Both teams had played a draw in their previous matches, so they were both hungry for a win. DUT Durban’s Vusi Nxasane, missed a clear header in front of the goal post after the pacey Victor Ngcobo banged in a beautiful cross beating the defenders and managing to sneak it in the eighteen yard area. A few minutes later, Vama Mbeje also got a similar chance but this time it was a through ball from the midfielder granting him an opportunity to get his name on the score sheet but unfortunately his shot went over the bar.
These two scoring opportunities put on a lot of pressure on the Pietermaritzburg side, forcing them to go for an all out attack on the opposition. They came close to scoring towards the end of the second half but keeper, Mondli Bhengu came to the rescue forcing the ball for a corner after striker Siyanda Phungula got a free kick just outside the box.
At the closing stages of the first half, Vusi Nxasane and Themba Zuma were both cautioned for playing rough and unsporting behavior.
Miscommunication at the start of the second half from the Durban side, saw Siyanda Phungula capitalise on their mistake and got his name on the score sheet.
DUT PMB coach, Patrick Hlabisa made a substitution soon after, taking out the tired Vuyo Dlamini and replacing him with attacking mid-fielder, Thulani Zulu.
In an aim to keep the game under control at the dying minutes of the game, Hlabisa yet again made a substitution, this time a defensive one.
Still without a win this season, DUT Durban coach, Siyabonga Ndlovu is still a bit optimistic about remaining games.
“Unfortunately luck was not on our side and the hosts were obviously the better side, hopefully when they come in our home ground, we will try by all means to beat them by 4-0,” said Ndlovu.
With missed opportunities in the game, DUT Durban Captain, Andile Mavundla said, “This was a very tough game for us. Most of our players are new and are not familiar with the DUT derby, so it was very tough for me to mentor them while playing because I was all over the field.”
Hlabisa however felt the visitors gave them a hard time.
“I would like to congratulate our opponents on giving us a tough match, it was not easy to get goals past them but fortunately we were the better side as we managed to get a goal. We will see what they have in store for us when we play against them in their home ground.”
PMB captain, Siyanda Phungula had expectations to win the game as the ladies team had come away with a win in their match.
“My team and I knew we were going to beat them because there was no way that we could allow to disappoint our fans, next time we play the derby which is away, we will embarrass them even more and the score will be double what it was today, either than that, it was a good game,” he said.
