DUT HOCKEY TEAM HOPES TO BOUNCE BACK

After a demoralising 7-6 loss to Pinetown in their last league match on Wednesday, the DUT woman’s hockey team has promised to pick up the pace and get back to winning ways when they take on the Rovers tonight.
The team – nicknamed The Tigers – has endured a torrid start of the league. They have won two games, drawn one and lost three games, and are now sitting in mid-table.
However, for a team which is playing its first ever season of indoor hockey, coach Nathi Ngubane believes the team has been performing well.
“It is a very promising team. So far I think we are doing well, since we only started playing indoor hockey this year,” said Ngubane.
Ngubane is a privately hired coach from the KwaZulu-Natal Hockey Association. This is his first season in charge of the team.
Indoor hockey was introduced at DUT earlier this year and the team started playing on January 16. According to the coach, the team started by joining a regional league comprised of nine teams. The league is still underway and ends this week.
Team captain Zabathemba Muthembu was optimistic about how the team had performed lately and what their future may hold.
“Despite the fact that we started this year. The performance has been good, a bit weak, but we will improve with time,” said Mthembu.
The team has been getting support from the university’s administration as well as students who have cheered from the sidelines when they take to the field.
According to Indresain Pather, head of athletics at DUT, R50 000 was pumped into hockey for 2014, and he assured moral support for the team as well.
“The more they train, the more they will win leagues and we, as a department, will always be supportive,” said Parther.
The DUT Tigers will lock horns with the Rovers at the DUT Sports Centre at Steve Biko Campus. The game is scheduled to start at 6pm.
