The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) netball side won the Annual Sports, Health & Fitness Exchange Netball Tournament that was hosted at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
The DUT netball side bit the Moses Mabhida Ladies in the final to secure their victory after a long day of sporting activities.
A DUT netball player Lelo Mathebula said that it was the display of teamwork which saw them winning the trophy.
“I’m very happy that we won because we played well even though the fatigue was catching up on us but we pushed as a team because we wanted to win this tournament and I’m glad we did,” said a joyful Mathebula.
Meanwhile on the seven-aside fields, the DUT soccer team won their group and moved straight to the semi-finals where they hammered Moses Mabhida Boys by three goals to zero.
In the final, DUT met last year’s champions University of KwaZulu-Natal in the grudge match as the UKZN side thrashed out DUT on semi-final last year.
The DUT took an early lead in just 5 minutes to the game after a great combination play which saw Khetha Ndlovu scoring his seven goal of the tournament.
With just a few minutes left on the clock, DUT let it slide in the back which saw UKZN capitalising and finds the equaliser.
The match ended in the one-all draw and the game went straight to the penalty shoot-out which saw UKZN being victorious. DUT skipper Sabelo Duma who also won the Player of The Tournament, said that he is disappointed to lose in the final.
“We were the better team everyone saw that we just let it slide in dying minutes and that is heart-breaking but I’m very proud of the guys, they showed character just that it wasn’t our day,” said Duma.
There were a lot of activities all around the Mabhida Field such as aerobics, soccer, netball, rope skipping and other games which kept the crowd entertained.
