England defeat Proteas in T20 match to level the series
England narrowly edged the proteas by just 2 runs in a nail-biting exchange, in Kingsmead cricket stadium, Durban on Friday.
South Africa won the toss and elected to field. Proteas made a single change from a straitened victory on Wednesday evening in Buffalo park, East London. Bjorn Fortuin a spin bowler replaced the veteran fast bowler Dale Steyn.
The Proteas attack spear-headed by Lungi Ngidi looked poised to cause trouble for England, as Ngidi himself dismissed England wicket keeper Jos buttler in the second over, who has looked hapless in this entire England tour of South Africa dating back to the test matches, he was caught outside edge by Ngidi for 2(4).
Jason Roy who has enjoyed so much time in south Africa partnered with Bairstow for a formidable 53(23), it didn’t last long though as you would’ve expected in aT20 contest, Bairstow was bowled out on top stump by Phehlukwayo. in came the England skipper Eoin Morgan. Roy 40 (29) was shortly taken by Off-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.
Then came the England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who played superbly 47(30) alongside Moeen Ali 39(11) who was also egregious with his bat, and was dismissed having played a vital role in England’s 204/7 in 20 0vers.
With South Africa needing 205 runs to win from 120 balls. It looked improbable and was a tough mountain to climb for Proteas. Proteas openers Themba Bavuma and Quintin De kock took the sttage, it was the latter though who lit the touch paper, the sturdy pair kept hurling sixes and fours through the Umngeni End, the pair combined for 53 (30), with De kockhitting eight(6) and four(4) but was duly dismissed by Mark Wood for 65(22).
In came David Miller, Wood stroke again this time dismissing Bavuma for 31. Van der Dussen stepped up and played magnificently 43(26) alongside Miller, but the latter was quickly dismissed by Chris Jordan.
With JJ Smuts gone and Phehlukwayo dismissed for zero, Dwaine Pretorius came in and really played his part, rallied behind by an ecstasy fully packed crowd, but unfortunately he was bowled out by Curran.
With the Proteas needing 3 runs from 1 ball, Fortuin came in, it must be said only a boundary would have secured the victory for Proteas, but Fortuin wascaught in the gully after he launched his ball high, and England leveled the three match series going into the final match on Sunday at Supersport Park, Centurion 14:30.
