eThekwini municipality hosts one on one sports dialogue
eThekwini Municipality Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit hosted a One on One sports dialogue in Moses Mabhida stadium on Wednesday.
The dialogue which was chaired by the Lamontville Golden Arrows F.C chairperson & acting CEO of the PSL, Mato Madlala. The dialogue saw some of KZN sports stars such as the former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Brilliant Khuzwayo make an appearance.
The dialogue was aimed at discussing the future of different sport codes in Durban. eThekwini’s head of Parks, Recreation & Culture, Thembinkosi Ngcobo said that as the municipality, it is important to recognise all sport codes.
“Our aim is to popularise all games, make sure that people of Durban participate in all of them and make Durban and sporting city. We want to make sports a lifestyle,” said Ngcobo.
Another Durban star who joined the panel is the former goalkeeper, Brilliant Khuzwayo who was forced into an early retirement in July due to an ankle injury. Khuzwayo was honoured by the municipality to be the face eThekwini Games.
Khuzwayo said that growing up in townships is not easy because there is little exposure for other sport except for soccer.
“Growing up in uMlazi was very difficult for me, townships kids are likely to be exposed to drugs and other criminal activities. I am so happy to be given this task to make an impact in other people’s lives. I am very passionate about sports and want to make sure that the youth look up to people like us,” said Khuzwayo.
The municipality is currently preparing to host the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) games that will take place in December.
These games will include sports codes such as soccer, tennis, rugby, boxing, chess, karate, swimming, basketball, volleyball, dance, netball, indigenous games and others.
