The Durban University of Technology football team continued their winning ways when they defeated the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville Campus at Alpine Sport Ground on Saturday evening.
Goals from striker Nkanyiso Jali and substitute Sandile Cele ensured DUT remain unbeaten in the league after four games – and are firmly plated at the top of the league.
Westville were the first to lay an attack as they were playing more in the half of the home side. The great display from the visitors nearly gave them the goal in the 16th minute as their striker took a great shot, which cannoned into the woodwork.
The lightning fast attacking by Westville put pressure on the DUT defenders, who were making shaky mistakes. Despite showing great brand of football, they were unable to penetrate the defence.
Instead, DUT broke the deadlock in the 36 minute when Jali buried a cross from a free kick whipped in by Andile Mavundla. UKZN continued to attack and tried to restore parity before the break, but again nothing came of it.
Whatever coach DUT coach Nhlanhla Mshibe told his boys during half time worked as they came out with guns blazing, playing magnificent attacking football and putting the pressure on Westville. DUT almost doubled the lead in the 48th minute but Thabani Zondo’s header hit cross bar.
DUT caught Westville off guard when Zondo ran with the ball from their half, passed a through ball to Cele who volleyed home to give his side a commanding lead 2-0.
Although the away side played a good football but DUT was too much for them as they scooped all three points to stretch their unbeaten run to three matches.
Mshibe’s boys will be looking to maintain their momentum on Wednesday afternoon when they lock horns with Berea College at the Edgewood Sports Ground. Kick off is at 16h00.
