Orlando Pirates Chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza introduced new head coach Vladimir Vermezovic to the players on Thursday morning.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach takes over from Roger De Sa who resigned last month. Speaking at the club’s training ground in Rand Stadium, Khoza said it was important to give VV warm welcome.
“It is a very important day for us as we welcome our new coach. We introduced VV to the technical team yesterday (Wednesday) and today it’s the turn of the players,” Khoza said in a statement. “The coach has a great responsibility on his shoulders but we are confident in his ability.”
In Saturday’s clash against Free State Stars, current caretaker coach Eric Tinkler will be in charge as the 50-year-old is still waiting for his work permit.
“Vermezovic will be attending the match over the weekend as an observer with Tinkler in charge of the team. He is still waiting for his paperwork, which will hopefully clear this week, meaning that he will officially start work next week,” added Khoza,
In the same statement, VV said that he is looking forward to work with the team.
“I met with the players today, some of them I know from before while I was at Chiefs and there are a few faces that I will be getting to know when I start officially,” Vermezovic said.
“I have a three-year contract and have plans that we will be executing. We have been doing okay now, it helps that the team won during the week (beating Sundowns by 1-0), one could see that maybe the confidence was down from the previous results,” the Serbian added.
VV said that he’ll be using the weekend to work closely with Tinkler and Teboho Moloi to make sure he’s ready once his work permit is completed.
“I am happy to be here and look forward to the challenge. We have a good group that we can work with.”
Meanwhile Lehlohonolo ‘Major’ Majoro, who completed his move to the Buccaneers from Chiefs early this week, joined his new teammates for his first training this morning.
“I am pleased to have joined Orando Pirates. This is a club with a rich and proud history. I want to tell the supporters that I will don this jersey with pride and I look forward to making them happy in everything I do,” said Majoro.
