LIVERPOOL CLOSER TO BPL TITLE – ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP
By: Samkele Sokhela
Liverpool underlined their Barclays Premier League title hopes after an enthralling 3-2 home win against Manchester City on Sunday.
Goals from Raheem Sterling, Martin Skrtel and Phillippe Coutinho’s 78th minute winner carried Liverpool to their 10th straight league victory and cemented their possition at the league summit, with 77 points.
City’s goals came from David Silva and a Glen Johnson’s own goal. Liverpool are now seven points above City, who have two games in hand. Should the Reds win all their remaining four matches, they will claim their first top-flight title in 24 years.
Chelsea kept their Premier League title hopes alive as they produced a hard-fought 1-0 away win over 10-man Swansea City on the same day. A second half strike by Demba Ba was enough for the London club to garner three points, and sit two points behind Liverpool. Chelsea and Liverpool still have to clash at Anfield in what looks like a title decider.
Kagiso Dikgacoi’s Crystal Palace continued their good run as they limped up to the 12th spot on the Premiership standings after beating Aston Villa 1-0 at Selhurst Park. Jason Puncheon’s soletary goal in 75th minute ensured that Palace collect maximum points.
Fulham also won on the day as they defeated Norwich City by 1-0 at Craven Cottage. The results means the Cottagers have moved off the bottom of the log, but still sit in the relegation zone. Cardiff City got away with a much-needed 1-0 win over high-flying Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium. Torres Ruiz’s second half goal brought hopes that Cardiff City could survive relegation.
