The Department of Maritime Studies showed a lot of consistency when they outperformed their respective opponents to be the big winners of the Applied Science Faculty tournament at Fred Crookes Sports Centre.
Students of the department showed unity as they managed to defeat their faculty mates in tag rugby, soccer, indoor volleyball and tug of war, although they failed to impress in netball.
The stable performance was a result of the department sports day on Wednesday, Siyabonga Ngema revealed.
The second year student said, “all the teams that won yesterday had to compete in today’s tournament and we did very well.”
Although they won in most sporting codes, Ngema also attributed the amazing performance to members of Berea Residence.
They also won the soccer title as they defeated the organisers, Sport Studies faculty by 3 goals to one.
Three trophies were not enough as they added the tag rugby cup to their trophy cabinet after a difficult encounter against Biotechnology students which ended 3 – 2.
A disappointing performance from tournament’s favourites the Sport Studies faculty was redeemed by their ladies on the netball court, who beat the Chemistry Faculty side by 6 – 4 to claim their only trophy.
