MARITZBURG WHIPS UNCONVINCING CHIPPA
By: Lucky Khanyile
Maritzburg United clinched a 3-0 victory over vulnerable Chippa United at Harry Gwala stadium.
The Team of Choice recorded their second win of the season after four games into the new 2014/2015 season. The game was held in front of the home crowd and they never disappointed.
Maritzburg was the better of the two, penetrating the defence of the Chilli Boys. This was evident as they were awarded with an early goal in the 19th minute courtesy of Mohammed Anas.
The on debut Chippa United goalkeeper Fatau Dauda, made crucial stops in the game. The former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper denied Steve Komphela’s man a lead in the very 1st minute of the game.
Komphela’s men never backed down as they later managed to get the better of Dauda.
The visitors suffered a huge blow 22 minutes into the half when their winger Joseph Molangoane was stretched off the field and was replaced by Dumisani Zwane.
The second stanza saw the Pietermaritzburg based-side continuing where they left off in the first half. Nhlanhla Vilakazi slotted home the second goal of the night with a right-foot cannon that took his side to a 2-0 lead.
Sheldon van Wyk made sure that his side bagged all the three points when he netted on the 83rd minute of the game taking his side to 4th on the log.
The other games of the night saw Ajax Cape Town getting the better of the limping Bidvest Wits by 3-1 at Athlone Stadium. The Urban Warriors now top the table without a loss after four games with three wins and one draw.
The Roger de Sa-coached club added more misery on Wits who have not been consistent lately. The Clever Boys are seating on the number five spot after four games.
This has not been a joyful season for Gavin Hunt’s side who have just suffered a semi-final defeat against Pirates in the MTN 8.
The other match saw Moroka Swallows edge Polokwane City by 3-2 in a thriller held in Dobsonville.
The other games will take place on Wednesday with the big one sees Mamelodi Sundowns lock horns with Pirates.
