MIDLANDS BEAT DURBAN IN LADIES SOCCER

The Durban University of Technology’s Midlands ladies soccer team defeated DUT Durban 2-1 at Steve Biko campus on Saturday.
From early on in the match, Midlands was the stronger side in the field, having greater ball possession than the home side. Both teams missed many opportunities to score a goal in the first half.
There were many shots to the goalpost by Midlands that were unsuccessful. But there was a breakthrough after 20 minutes into the match. Midlands’s striker, Sithembile Zondi, scored the first goal of the game.
The goal seemed to have motivated the Midlands team because their strikers showed hunger to score another goal. The same couldn’t be said for the Durban side though, as countless reckless mistakes were made and they missed out on opportunities to score goals.
Just before half time, Durban capitalised on the recklessness of the Midlands goalkeeper, Simphiwe Zungu. Durban striker, Yulie Ngcobo, scored a goal when Zungu let the ball slip from her hands. The half time score was 1-1.
In the 2nd half, the Durban side played better than they did in the first half. Both teams seemed to be playing aggressively as there were many injuries. A long break was taken when Midlands’ goalkeeper got a serious injury. The game was resumed and the teams seemed to both struggle to score a goal.
After 80 minutes into the game, it looked like it would end in a draw. When the match was nearly over, Sthembile Mwelase scored a goal to seal three points for Midlands.
The DUT Durban ladies soccer coach, Thinasonke Mbuli, was saddened by the loss. “I’m disappointed by the results, we didn’t play well and we didn’t use the chances we had,” she said.
She also added that she doesn’t want her team to make the same mistakes in their upcoming game against UKZN. “We have to try capitalise, work harder,” said Mbuli.
Midlands is currently number one in the league and Durban is number two. Durban will play another match at Steve Biko Campus next week Saturday against UKZN Edgewood.
