Orlando Pirates defeated Tunisian giants SC Sfaxien in their Confederation Cup Group B clash at Taieb Mhiri Stadium on Sunday.
A 47 minute goal from Orlando Pirates right-winger Thabo Rakhale, was all it took to add more woes to the already struggling FC Sfaxien. FC Sfaxien are currently at the bottom of Group B in this year’s Confederation Cup after a defeat and a draw.
The Buccaneers, who have bounced back after a 2-1 defeat to Zamalek a fortnight ago at Mbombela Stadium, managed to hold on to their one nil lead which give them hope of playing in the Confed knock-out stages.
The Soweto giants went on this game very motivated and cautious knowing very well that the Tunisians had all the experience in the world, having won the competition on the three occasions.
Kermit Erasmus should have made it 2-0 in the dying minutes when his header came off the woodwork from the rebound after R. Jridi had done well to deny Rakhale from inside the box.
This vital hard fought victory didn’t come easy as the Tunisian giants were giving their all but the visitors defence was solid.
The home side pushed more players forward trying to get an equaliser in the dying minutes of the game however the away side defence stood tall.
Pirates managed to hold on to their lead for three massive points in Tunisia. They remain second in the group B standings with six points after three games behind the on- form Egyptian giant Zamalek.
The next stop for Orlando Pirates is the most anticipated Carling Black Label cup on the 1ST of August against their arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at Soccer City.
