Cristiano Ronaldo came to the rescue of Real Madrid in a much anticipated Madrid derby as they were held to a thrilling 2 all draw by Atletico Madrid on Sunday.
The Portuguese superstar scored an equalising goal in the 82nd minute to save a point the La Liga table toppers at the Vincente Calderon.
It took just 3 minutes for a deadlock to be broken as Karim Benzema put the visitor ahead after brilliantly beating the offside trap.
The hosts were denied what was seen as clear penalty after Sergio Ramos clipped Diego Costa inside the 18 yard box, that decision resulted in Atletico’s fans pelting objects to the field.
The Los Colchoneros would eventually level matters through Koke, after a sloppy defending by Carlo Ancelotti’s men. Costa missed two chances and the score remained level until Gabi hit a ferocious strike from 40 yard and gave Real’s goalkeeper Diego Lopez no chance,
Third-placed Atletico continued to press for a third goal and had another penalty appeal turned down by the referee who gave Costa a yellow card for simulation instead. That decision provoked the club’s coach German Burgos who was sent off for his angry reactions to the referee.
Ancelotti said that a point is a point and they need to take it as it is and it was a very difficult game.
“We tried to play, but it was not easy because Atletico were very tough and it was hard for us to take them out of their comfort zone. Towards the end it was better because we started to play and had a lot of chances,” Ancelotti was quoted as saying on the club website.
“A point is a point. It was a difficult match. We tried to play but it wasn’t easy because Atlético played a very rough game. In the end it was very good, and when we started to play we had a lot of chances. They tried to impose a violent game. We don’t play like that. We tried to play and in the end we did it.”
