SEVEN ASIDE TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS

Albert Park United defeated Usuthu by 2 goals to nil in the final of the Sport Management 7-a-side Indoor Soccer Tournament 2013 on Friday at the Durban University of Technology, Steve Biko campus.
The seven aside soccer tournament was an event which was organized and hosted by the second year Sport Management students. This event will contribute towards their assessment marks for the year.
The group consists of 19 members and they call themselves “The 20 Something”. According to the group leader Tyrone Rudolph, the meaning behind their name is that they are all young 20 something (age) individuals with developing vision and ideas.
“Having the opportunity to host and organise an event is undoubtedly an exciting aspect. The 20 Something’s shared the ability to successfully host and organize a well-presented sporting event. We did thing very different this year, and one of the main attraction for our event was the promotional video we created beforehand and then we also used a website for the event details for the teams and so forth,” Rudolph said in a statement released after the tournament.
Eight teams took part on this tournament being Hanova96, Juventus, Albert Park United, Galaxy Indoor Club, Atletico Madrid, Richgang FC and FA Fresher’s FC. The prices were as follows: 3rd place team got bronze medals, 2nd team given silver medals and winners received gold medals, a trophy (Medals and the trophy, sponsored by Sport and Recreation) , t-shirts ( given by Corporal affairs DUT) and then a winning cash with the total value of R1120-00.
They managed to get sponsors from Hollard Insurance, Hugos Panel Shop, Sport and Recreation, Amanzi Water and aQuelle (main sponsor for Sport Management Event). “We were also given nine t-shirts which were donated by corporate affairs at DUT and had Red bull come and give out samples of their energy drink. We also had a various donations including amounts ranging from R1200 and R2000 with the raffle prizes being sponsored by West Walk Jewellers (His and Her Watches) and Whizzkids Unitered (soccer boots),” said Rudolph.
The third place went to Galaxy Indoor Club and the second place went to Usuthu.
“The 20 Somethings” thanked the sponsors and everyone who contributed in making the day successful. “We would like to also to take this opportunity to give a big thanks to the Department of Sport studies for allowing us and giving us the opportunity to be exposed to such conditions and to be able to organize an event,” Rudolph said.
