Durban will for the first time host the Soweto derby final.
After a lot of suspense, the Premier Soccer League finally announced that Durban’s majestic Moses Mabhida Stadium will host the MTN 8 final between Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on Saturday, 20 September. The kick-off time is 20:15.
This was confirmed by the PSL CEO, Brand de Villiers. “We are excited to announce that the MTN 8 final will be hosted by Durban, a place that has proven to be a huge success for us in the last couple of years,” he said.
According to the PSL CEO, Durban is the place to stage big events since the fans are very eager for football and come in their numbers to support the game. He asked supporters not to waste time and buy tickets.
“What I can say to the fans is that they must purchase their tickets soon. We know that the stadium can only take around 50 000 people. Once we reach safety capacity, we will close the sale of tickets,” said de Villiers.
The enthusiasm for the game by local football fanatics was witnessed as tickets were sold out- four hours after being made available to the public. It was confirmed later by PSL that 50 000 tickets were sold.
The chairman of the PSL, Dr Irvin Khoza, was quoted as saying that Durban had almost all the boxes ticked for the requirements to host the anticipated final even though he had “no say in the decision”.
He said, “KwaZulu-Natal is central for everyone, has enough hotels, hospitality, nice weather and nice people.”
