The Durban University of Technology’s Faculty of Health Sciences hosted an inter-faculty sport tournament at Steve Bikos’ Soccer Ground yesterday.
The tournament focused on soccer and netball as both girls and boys from various courses from the faculty competed against each other in the one day event.
The organiser and coordinator of the tournament, Zamia Mayeza who is a Student Liaison Officer in the faculty, said that he wanted his students to be active and get them to interact with each other.
“We wanted to our students to actually do something physical and to get them to know each other and be familiar with each other,” said Mayeza.
Mayeza hopes that the tournament will grow into something massive.
“We want this tournament to grow and in time we will plan and get all the faculties involved,” explained Mayeza.
Mzwandile Khumalo, who is a part-time lecturer in the faculty for the First Year Student Experience (FYSE) Programme, said that the games are an opportunity for students to show off their hidden talents.
“By hosting a tournament like this we want to send out a message that it is not only through academia that students can excel but they can also excel through their skills and through their talents and also everything that we do that is integrated through our learning,” said Khumalo.
Philani Manci, who is studying a Bachelor of Technology in Nursing at the Indumiso Campus in Pietermaritzburg, said that he feels that his team has a great chance of winning the soccer tournament.
“After they won the first game I’m sure they can go on and win this tournament, I trust my boys, we are the best from where we come from,” said Manci.
