Sri Lanka trashed Proteas by 180 runs in the opening match of the South African tour at the Premadassa Stadium, Colombo, on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and opted to bowl first. South African bowlers got punished by Sri Lanka batsman, Kumar Sangakkara, who got his career best of 169 in the match. Sangakkara managed to hit 6 sixes and 18 fours and helped get the home side an impressive score of 320/5 in 50 overs.
Hashim Amla’s absence was felt in the Proteas’ batting side as batsmen crumbled. Alviro Peterson and Captain A.B. de Villiers’ partnership gave South African’s hope, but those hopes quickly got destroyed when the partnership ended with a total of 44 runs.
De Villiers got taken out with a total of 23 and Peterson left the crease with the highest total for South Africa of 29. It was downhill from there for the Proteas as they ended with a poor total of 140/10 and 18 overs to spare.
It was South Africa’s second biggest ODI defeat.
The match was Sri Lanka’s biggest win over the Proteas. But South African Captain A.B. de Villiers remains hopeful. “It’s not the end of the series; I know my boys will fight back,” said de Villiers.
The captain further went on to say that the fact the next match will be on the same field is an advantage. “We were way below par, but I know what the players are capable of, the second game is on the same field, we know the condition quite well now.”
The second ODI match will be played on Tuesday on the same field. Sri Lanka currently leads the 5 match series by 1-0.
