The finals of A-Section Hockey in the University Sport South Africa Games 2017 took place on Sunday at the Wits Hockey Astro in Johannesburg.
In the men’s final, it was the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) who took on each other whilst the ladies final was played with the University of Pretoria (TUKS) and University of Johannesburg.
The men’s final was a tight encounter and it came to a nail biting end as UJ edged out NMMU, taking the win 4-3.
Sean Burke, who watched every game due to his photography duties in the tournament, said that UJ deserved to be champions.
“Congratulations to the men’s teams to making it thus far with all the bruising and fatigue, UJ still proved on the field they are champions,” said Burke.
Students of UJ who came to support, said that they could not believe that they had just won.
“I am actually glad we made it to the end. I didn’t see the team as champions but I guess they proved me wrong, congratulations to our boys,” said Kheta Khumalo, UJ sport management student.
TUKS took on UJ in the ladies final and it was a tight encounter as TUKS won the game by a goal to nil.
Gareth Ewing, coach of UJ, was happy with the performance regardless of the results.
“Such an exciting final to round off to a tough week of USSA hockey. Thanks to the team for performing when it counted most, it is always a privilege to work with such a talented bunch,” said Ewing.
