Tso Vilakazi Name Drops His Ideal Pirates Coach, Benni McCarthy
Orlando Pirates legend Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi prefers Benni McCarthy as the club’s head coach. “Pirates need someone who understands the culture”. He said.
The club’s current coach, Josef Zinnbauer has had rough rides with the buccaneers last year, but he manged to shift things around towards the end. Despite the effort the German strategist has shown taking the club to the third place right after a wobbly start of the season, his future at Pirates has been uncertain.
Vilakazi speaking to KickOff.com said Zinnbeauer was not the right person for Pirates in the first place because of his poor previous record.
“I don’t have a problem with Zinnbauer, and he has done so well to be honest, but I have so many questions,” said Vilakazi.
“His record raised so many red flags for many of us. He relegated a team and was not coaching for some time before joining Pirates, which for me I don’t think he was the right man for the job.” He added.
Although there are undertones circulating about Gavin Hunt for both Chief and Pirates, Vilakazi contends that pirates need someone who understands the culture.
“I think Benni McCarthy can be a good coach for Pirates. If he doesn’t go to Chiefs, they must take him, give him a chance, and trust him. It’s about time we give our former players big jobs.” Said Vilakazi.
Fans also shared their thoughts on this:
“I also think Benny can do wonders at pirates if given a chance we all know he has achieved a lot worldwide as a player and, he took Cape Town City FC to another level”.
“McCarthy is ready to reign a big club like Pirates, with the experience he got from coaching Cape Town City. Another thing, Benny understands the system in which Pirates plays because he was once a Pirates player. It won’t take him long to adjust”.
“If you looked at how Pirates played last season it wasn’t bad it was the Zinnbaurer’s first season he had to quickly adjust to our game and learn how Pirates play and their culture as well as a team and South African football as a whole.
“As for Bennie he is a good coach we know but I still feel like Pirates will be too big for him and maybe they can consider him in the next 2-3 seasons for now they must give this coach his fair chance let him sign his own players and then see how he does this coming season”
“I prefer local coaches and 90% of the coaches we have in the PSL are former players, that says something. As much as football has changed, the culture of football in SA remains the same. Which is why former players should be the top priority. They can instil that form into the current squad. Benny is a good coach who understands culture of football played or supposed to be played by pirates and they have best squad in the league lacking culture of football that is expected from them and German plumbers knows nothing about that.”
