Sean Tarry and S’manga Khumalo reigned supreme at the Tsogo Sun Race Day that took place at Scottsville Racecourse on Saturday.
The trainer jockey combination won the R750 000 South African Fillies sprint and the R1 million Tsogo Sun Sprint.
Carry on Alice won the Grade 1 South African fillies sprint in scintillating fashion as she led from start to finish in what was her last race before going to stud.
Collin Peters, a man who has followed Carry on Alice throughout the country, was overjoyed with the result.
“I am lost for words when this horse ran in Cape Town and Jo’burg I drove hundreds of kilometres to be there to watch it and here I am today with a winning ticket in my hand for the very last time,” said Peters.
Tarry said that she will be shipped to Australia where she will start breeding.
The big race of the day was the Tsogo Sun Sprint and Trainer where Sean Tarry saddled another winner in the form of Bull Valley.
Bull Valley skipped clear at the 300 metre marker and kept all challenges at bay as he went on to win comfortably, giving Tarry and Khumalo a grade one double on the day.
This race day is the biggest day for Scottsville Racecourse and it is one of the big meetings of the KwaZulu-Natal champion’s season calendar in the build-up to the biggest race day, the Vodacom July.
Racing enthusiasts braved through the cold and came out in their numbers to Pietermaritzburg.
“I don’t normally travel out of Durban in a hurry but for days like today I just have to,” said spectator Percy Soobramoney.
The next big race day in the champions season is on 3 June at Greyville Racecourse where the R2 million Grade 1 Daily News 2000 will take place.
