USUTHU DEFEND THEIR MAYORAL CUP TITLE

Amazulu FC beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 4-2 on penalties to win the uThungulu Mayoral Cup at Umhlathuze Sports Complex, Richards Bay on Saturday, 23 July.
On their way to the final, Amazulu beat Bloemfontein Celtic 5-3 on penalties after the match ended in a tie in the first match of the day. Meanwhile, Abafana Besthende marches their way to the final after beating the Thanda Royal Zulu 2-0 on penalties.
Even though the local boy didn’t go through to the final but, the crowd was very much entertained by the style of football displayed by Amabhubesi.
Even the cold weather at the stadium didn’t chase away the spectators as they waited for two hours for the final kick-off. In the final, the Durban derby produced great football as both teams went on each other fearlessly.
In the early minutes of the game, Arrows took an early lead after Amazulu defender made a handball in the box and Nduduzo Sibiya converted to put Arrows on the lead.
Arrows Lead didn’t last long as in just a few minutes later, Amazulu finds the equaliser as Mbongeni Gumede’s header find the back of the net.
Arrows again in the second half took a lead but Amazulu was able to equalise as the game approaches the final time, the match ended 2-2.
Amazulu Goalkeeper Sage Stephens Produced fine save in the penalty shootout as he denied Arrows two penalties and Linda Bhengu scored the winner to secure the cup title.
The newly appointed Amazulu head coach Joey Antipas was very pleased with his display on the tournament.
“Well it’s still an early start for the season but one thing I picked up from this tournament is the positivity of my players and we are hoping to work on those positive to build a strong solid team,” said Antipas.
Amazulu will be looking to apply their positive starts to the new 2016/2017 National First Division season as they looking to bounce back to the premiership.
