Cape Town City Ballet’s vivacious production, Night & Day, a tribute to the life and music of Cole Porter, graced the Durban Playhouse’s Opera stage for the first time over the weekend.
The opening show took place on Thursday and ran until Sunday, stunning the various audiences throughout the four days. After being the most successful production in Cape Town and Johannesburg, dance lovers in Durban now had the opportunity to catch this exhilarating work – with toe-tapping numbers including elements of jazz, tap dancing and cabaret – for the five performances only.
One of the 20th century’s most popular song writers, Porter, wrote some of the wittiest and romantic songs ever composed and dominated the American musical scene from the 1930’s to 1950’s.
Executive Director of the Cape Town City Ballet, Elizabeth Triegaardt, was thrilled by the turn out of the event taking into account that this was the shows debut.
“We had hoped that Durban audiences would appreciate the world-class dancing by South African dancers, the great music and the sheer enjoyment generated by the performance. Judging from our response and ticket sales it was quite evident that the show was a tremendous hit for its first run in Durban,” she said.
Triegaardt also mentioned that the production requires no specific age group and was successful in captivating all types of audiences. “Both old and young enjoy Porters music so we were glad to see a good mix of ages in the audience,” she stated.
The audiences roared with applause and it was clear to see the production was a major success. “I was hesitant at first as I really did not know what to expect from a ballet production but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The music, dance and outfits were spectacular; I would love to see another ballet production after this experience,” said Leann De Vrees a member of the audience who attended the ballet.
Directed by Pietermaritzburg-born dancer and choreographer, Robin Van Wyk, Night & Day delivered a highly enjoyable theatre experience a s well as dance of the highest standard.
