“A Book is A Friend” is the big sign you will see when walking outside The Workshop.
These are the small beginnings of Durban’s biggest Library that is set to be ready and standing in the year 2019.
The big and colourful display of books is an exhibition that is to raise awareness of the new Durban Central City Library that is going to be built by the EThekwini Municipality. The
new library is to be ready for public use by the year 2019.
Liberian, Pam Zondi who is part if this exhibition, said that she is very excited about the new library as it will be Durban’s biggest and most beautiful.
“The new library will be built right here where this exhibition is standing and it will stretch out right up to the Wentworth Taxi Rank. It will be three stories high and have a garden roof
where students and readers can have some fresh air while reading their books,” said an excited Zondi.
As a result of this library being built, the City Hall Library, Liberty study hall, and the Prince Edward Library will close down and the Durban Central City Library will be the main
Library in Durban.
“Our exhibition does not offer books for people to borrow because we are not an actual library but we do offer newspapers like The Mercury, Isolezwe and Sunday Times, Magazines
and a book exchange for people who want to exchange any books they have for our local selection,” continued Zondi.
Self-proclaimed bookworm, Andy Xulu who visits the exhibition often, said that she is excited about the new Library that will be built and appreciates the services she gets from the
“Although the exhibition is not a mobile Library and does not house any books for me to borrow, I like coming here because they offer a ‘book exchange’ which means I can come
with my old books and exchange them for the selection they have here, that is really cool,” said Xulu.
“I also like that they give me free WIFI when I sit out here and that’s one the biggest things that drew me here,” added Xulu.
The New Durban Central Library has a Facebook page which has more information on the building project and raising awareness about the Exhibition and the upcoming Library.
