ANC campaign in EFolweni turns sour
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Durban leg of the electioneering campaign saw him visit eFolweni township, South of Durban.
The African National Congress(ANC) supporters falling under Ward 95,blatantly rejected the nomination of Thokozani Xulu to as the proposed Ward Councillor in the upcoming Local Government Elections, that are set to take place on 01 November 2021.
Disgruntled ANC supporters supporters disrupted Ramaphosa as he was campaigning in the area and were seen holding up placards opposing the nominee, with some written, ‘Xulu Must Fall’.
Residents said that they opposed the nomination of this particular candidate as he was not a resident of the area. It is alleged community members and ANC supporters had previously raised Sisulu Nhlumayo as was the preferred candidate for Councillor position.
Fikile Mbalula who was present, lambasted ANC supporters who were chanting, ‘Xulu Must Fall’ calling them drunkards’ who intended to disrupt ANC Campaign.
“You must not drink alcohol, as you didn’t hear what the president was saying to you, Mhlekazi (Mister) you’ve consumed too much alcohol. You must not allow to be bought with alcohol to disrupt party’s actions, you must raise concerns while sober. I know you’ve been sent by the one who gave you alcohol, people of EFolweni will never follow drunkards! Phambili ngeANC Phambili!” Said Mbalula.
As the campaign unfolded, protesters gained momentum, and were getting increasingly rowdy, Ramaphosa ordered them to lower their placards as they’re were being disruptive and causing chaos while he was delivering his speech.
“We will go forward with the elected candidates, your concerns about Xulu will be resolved after the upcoming elections in November. I know there have been illegal nominations of candidates within the ANC, throughout the country, the task team will investigate the issue after the elections. Forward with our candidate forward! Forward with Comrade Xulu Forward! Like it or not we will vote for ANC, those who are causing chaos are ill- disciplined and are not being in line ANC protocols. Those who do not listen to the National Executive Committee must step aside. Do not listen to those from other political parties saying to you Nywe! Nywe! Nywe! Even those from the ANC saying Tswi! Tswi! Tswi! Please don’t,” he said.
