Cele to touch down on Umlazi ‘war zone’
South African Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele visited Umlazi township following the shock of double mass murders that claimed the lives of 11 people in KwaZulu-Natal.
Six people were shot and killed at U Section in Umlazi on Sunday, 29 August 2021. Days after the incident that occurred on Sunday, five more people were killed in W Section where three gunmen opened fire inside a house, two were shot in the head while three others
sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.
Minister Cele visited uMlazi on Thursday, 2 September 2021 and said that police were yet to make arrests on both cases but vowed that they were following up on a strong lead in the one incident, and whether the shootings are linked.
“In both incidents, those who were killed including a 14-year-old boy sadly were at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Some characters who were killed are linked to criminality taking place in surrounding areas,” Cele said.
A profile of one of the deceased shows he was a convicted criminal who was arrested and handed down a 12-year suspended sentence for various serious crimes including counts of armed robbery and possession of an illegal firearm, Cele added.
