City Increases bus fare
In a council meeting held on 5 August 2021, it was agreed that the the municipal service could increase the bus fare by 50C.
The approval emanates from a contractual agreement that stipulates that an increment must instituted on an annual basis, in efforts to keep up with the inflation and ensuring operating services are maintained. The increase from R5.50 to R6.00 will be effective from 1 September 2021.
It is estimated that about 150 000 commuters who uses the People Mover Municipal buses, the bus service is funded through passenger fare and contribution from council funding.
In a statement eThekwini Mayor, Kenneth Kaunda explained that the fare increase was last implemented in 2013.
“The fare increase is being recommended following an assessment of fuel, labor and other operating
costs. This is also to ensure that the bus service remains competitive with other modes of public transport operating in the geographical area,” he said.
The Kaunda, further added that the municipality has tried to ensure that a minimal increase is implemented.
