DA LAYS CHARGES AGAINST KZN HEALTH MEC
The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has laid criminal charges against KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane. The charges come after the MEC broke the Covid-19 regulations at her birthday over the weekend.
The DA charges follow a statement issued by KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala stating that the MEC must issue a public apology ,within 7 days, the MEC was also given a warning lastly, she would have 50% of her salary docked for next months salary payment. The charges were laid at the Durban North South African Police Service (SAPS) after their initial charges were blocked at the Durban Central SAPS.
The DA said that they have laid the charges in terms of Sections 36.1 (a) and (c) of government-issued adjusted alert level 3 regulations during the coronavirus Covid- 19 lockdown, which states that every person when attending a gathering, must wear a mask, maintain a distance of at least one and a half meters from each other in order to minimiseCovid-19 exposure.
The statement further states that they don’t believe that the MEC’s charges were enough and they regard the Premiers sanctions as “extremely weak” to the size of actions done during the third wave.
Furthermore, DA believes that the occurrence involving the Health MEC revealed that there are two sets of rules in the province and that the protection of certain bodies always comes first in addition, DA states that they remain committed to ensuring that the MEC is appropriately sanctioned on behalf of the province who deserves accountability from their
