Drunk neighbour attacks mentally ill teenager in Umlazi
A drunk man attacked a mentally ill teenager in Umlazi, A section on Sunday at 9:15 pm after accusing the teenager of being a robber.
Fanele Hadebe, a teenage resident said he was coming from his cousin’s house when he was attacked by Siyabusa Ndlovu.
“I was at my nearby cousin’s house to collect my jacket and ended up leaving late. On my way back home I was the only person walking on the street but eventually someone else was walking towards me,” said Fanele.
Fanele said that when the person came to close contact they both were able to identify each other. He added that he noticed the person was drunk as he was not able to walk properly.
“Siyabusa called the word robber then shouted out my name, pushed me and then punched me in the face twice. I shouted at him to stop since he knew me but he was aggressive. My nose started bleeding and I felt dizzy for a few minutes,” said Fanele.
Siyabusa said he was drunk and thought Fanele was a robber since it was late at night. He added that Fanele reached out to get something in his pocket which made him assume he was a robber.
Nomusa Hadebe, Fanele’s mother said her son came home with a bleeding nose which was devastating since he has a mental illness.
“My son was born with a mental illness so he is a very fragile person. I was very angry that he was attacked by our neighbour for no reason,” said Nomusa.
Fanele opened a case at the local police station and has applied for a protection order against Siyabusa.
