Expired drivers licences to be used beyond 2020
Road users can now breathe a sigh of relief following Transport Minister’s decision to permit road users with expired licences to use them until 2021.
On Wednesday, 22nd of July, 2020 Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula released a Gazette stipulating that licence cards expiring as of March 26 will be valid until year 2021. Mbalula gazetted this amendment to the lockdown regulations to consent road users to renew their driver’s licences until next year.
The grace period will however apply to certain road users, those whose licences that expired during lockdown.
“All learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits that expire during the period commenced from March 26 up to and including August 31 are deemed to be valid and their validity period ending on January 31, 2021,” said Mbalula.
Moreover, the grace period is also extended for all motor vehicle discs, temporary permits and road-worthy certificates, those that expired from March 26 up to and including May 31they will be considered valid until 31 August this year.
The Gazette further specify that motor trade number licences also have their validity extended for a further grace period on November 30. But that applies to certain motor trade number, those that expired during the period from March 26 and up to 31 May.
