Farmers protest against LIMA
On the Thursday, 4 August 2022 small farmers from Hammarsdale, under an organisation named Big Growers Association took to the streets to protest against LIMA Rural Development, which is an organisation that they work under.
According to the protesting farmers, during February 2022, the farmers signed a five-month contract to work under LIMA, they however were only able to work for only a few days, when they were abruptly asked to stop, the farmers say no clarity was given as to why their services were suddenly halted.
The farmers were and still are demanding the money for the days they worked. The farmers also demanded to see their contracts, claiming that, when they were the signing contracts, they were not afforded the opportunity to thoroughly go through the contracts. The contracts were read to them by someone from the LIMA management, so they now wish to see what they signed up for.
When the LIMA manager was asked about this, she made it clear that the whole situation is beyond them as the workers signed the contract with eThekwini Municipality.
She said all she can do was to set up a meeting with the officials of eThekwini. The meeting with the eThekwini Municipality officials is set up for 11th of August 2022.
The eThekwini Municipality officials that are going to be present in the coming meeting are Dumisani Nhlengethwa and Vuyolwethu Jayiya.
So the farmers along with the UPM made it clear that none of LIMA offices in the area, will operate until all their issues are resolved.
