The Hawks are on a mission to ransack the homes of former eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede, and her co-accused. The elite crime busters intend to seize R51 million in assets today.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that they are working with the AFU.
“We are going to make sure that all the assets that we believe the suspects might have gotten through their corrupt activities will be under our protection today,” said Mulaudzi.
He also added that they are also targeting properties belonging to 44 other suspects.
The Hawks have seized a number of luxury vehicles and an undisclosed amount of cash from several other properties, including the one in Somerset Park, Umhlanga and her homestead in Inanda.
It is understood that at least 10 properties linked to Gumede and her co-accused will be hit today.
Mzomuhle Dube, spokesperson for former eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede says Gumede does not own any lavish assets or properties.
“This is another political backbiting as she is leading in the race for chairperson in the eThekwini Region”.
Gumede and her co-accused were arrested early this year in connection with money laundering, fraud and corruption charges. They appeared at the Constitutional and Criminal Court on a charge pertaining to a tender of R208 million.
They were released on an R50 000 bail and are due to appear in court in January 2020.
