High ranking officer arrested for fraud
The Deputy National Police Commissioner was arrested during a pre-dawn raid.
The officer was arrested in her Johannesburg house on Monday morning. Her arrest is in connection to a supply of emergency warning equipment for the South African Police Service in 2017.
According to Investigating Directorate (ID), spokesperson Sindisiwe Twala, she is the 13th accused expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court on Monday for charges of corruption, fraud, theft, and money laundering.
” Her arrest and appearance relate to the supply of emergency warning equipment for the South African Police Service [SAPS] in 2017. The contract price and exposure to the police fiscus was R191 Million. However, R65 Million was paid to the service provider. The payment of R22 Million was stopped at the advanced stages of the ID’s investigation into the matter,” said Twala.
Others who are allegedly involved include Judge Rose, Samantha Andrens, Vimpie Manthatha and a company represented by its director.
A number of police officials have been arrested in the past couple of months, including former acting National Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane.
