Mayhem at Durban Westville prison after an inmate stabbed
An inmate stabbing has become the norm at Durban Westville prison. This follows after hospitalisation of yet another inmates.
It is alleged that an inmate stabbed their fellow inmate. This incident follows another in which five knives were used on the same section. Leading to emergency team intervention in order to disarm the offenders. Investigation of safety and how sharpened objects managed to be smuggled in, follows.
According to the Department of Correctional Services (DSC), they raised their concerns, after the similar incident took place, earlier this week at Durban Westville correctional center on the same prison units where five knives were confiscated.
Due to the statement issued by the department spokesperson, Thulani Mdluli. He explained the confusion of how inmates manages to be in possession of knives, amid covid-19 where visitors are not allowed access.”
The department strives to maintain safety in our facilities but recent incidents questions our credibility as a correctional facility. Where the society expects us to correct and mould the offenders into better citizen, free of crime when they leave here. We shall follow on who assist inmates in access of sharpened objects and they will face the law”, said Mdluli.
The conclusion reached was for all offenders involved in this incident will be degraded and transferred to eBongweni maximum center.
The chief operations commissioner, Mandla Mkhabela visited the prison and he said, “he condemns what happened and assures safety in their prison”.
