Msunduzi has done it again.
Pietermaritzburg residents are fed up with Msunduzi Municipality’s blatant mismanagement of the New England Road landfill site, that often leaves them chocking on smoke and toxic chemicals.
At 7pm on Monday, a fire started at the landfill site and has been burning throughout. Residents have been complaining bout the toxic smells and smoke, they say it’s hard for them to function in this smoke. The smoke from the landfill site covered the whole of Pietermaritzburg CBD and neighbouring townships.
Bukhosi Mkhize (not his real name) said, “This is not the first time this happens, and because of corruption, the municipality will wait until the fire dissolves itself after some days”
Mkhize further added that, the municipality’s contribution has to ask people with respiratory diseases to move elsewhere for a couple of days.
”This during a lockdown and while people are trying to recover from a respiratory virus and what Msunduzi Municipality is doing shows they don’t care,” said Mkhize
The Municipality’s spokesperson had not responded to the emails by the time the article was published.
