NSFAS to revoke funding to 5000 students for the 2020 academic year
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has issued communique saying 5000 students will no longer be funded for the 2020 academic year. According to the statement, the information obtained from South African Revenue Services (SARS) shows that total household family income for these students was above R350 000.
The affected students will have 14 days to petition this decision by submitting proof of change of income to NSFAS for review. This has caused havoc as the public reacts to this statement.
“This is really unfair, we are in the middle of the pandemic, and some parents won’t be able to pay the fees. Students will be forced to drop out,” Says a homeopath student Anele Ngcobo.
Noluthando Nzaca said that “They must just continue to fund them till the academic year is over.”
Sibusiso Sithole a journalism students says that, “Students deserve a chance to explain themselves because the fact that they got the funding meant they qualify.”
