Parents expected to pay full school fees despite lockdown
Chief executive of the Federal for School Governing Bodies of South Africa, Paul Colditz, told Independent Online that school fees were a standardized obligation.
Parents will be expected to pay full school fees despite lockdown, and those who have lost income could apply for school fees exemption. Colditz said just because buildings of schools were closed, it does not mean that education had stopped.
“There is an exception, where there are regulations that make provision for an exemption of parents from paying. We know now that parents are going to lose their jobs and their income, and without that they obviously cannot pay,” he said.
Parents whose children have not returned to school premises yet are devastated because they are paying a lot of money for children who are still at home. Siphamandla Xaba who a father of a six year old is doing grade 1 said he does not understand the reason for paying school fees for children who are at home doing nothing.
“I would have understood if maybe the schools were making effort in ensuring that our children are still doing their work during this pandemic. They are not sending any work either on our post offices or emails and they expect us to pay full school fees,” he said.
However, teachers employed by SGBs will lose their salaries if parents do not pay fees during lockdown.
