SASCO BATTLES OVER TITLES

The situation intensifies within the South African Student Congress (SASCO) and the Durban University of Technology, as the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections draws near.
SASCO members were attacked by their fellow comrades after fighting over a banner at Steve Biko Campus on Friday.
The members had the organisation’s banners put up and another group of SASCO members- about twenty of them- attacked them and removed banners.
SASCO’S Deputy Secretary Mxolisi Sbiya, the victim of this brutal attack said that he is staggered by these actions.
“I did not fight back because I respect the comrades and I understand the institution’s obligations,” said Sibiya.
He (Sibiya) clarified that SASCO is a member of a tri-party alliance under the umbrella of the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA), and they serve different purposes.
“SASCO is there to mobilise students for free learning, not to insult one another,” he said.
Since the restructuring of SASCO nationally, the institution’s SASCO leadership was also restructured.
The faction leaders are Njabulo Mchunu, who declares himself as the current chairperson, and Scelo Mndebele, who allegedly assaulted Sbiya, during the fight over the banners.
Mndebele said that it was not a violent attack- they just took their belongings.
“I’ve never touched him, but we pulled at each other because he broke my tablet,” he said.
To address and resolve the conflict between the members of the PYA, there will be a march on the 17th of September from Curries Fountain to the Durban City Hall.
