Students staying in the Glenwood area worried over safety
Students residing around the Moore road area in Glenwood fear going outside wearing revealing clothes because of threats they allegedly get from sex workers who are operating around the area.
Glenwood, like other areas fringing the inner city, is faced with high levels of prostitution, vagrants and crime. The area is also students oriented and within a close proximity to the Durban University of Technology. Students also had to live in fear because of crime.
Second year electronic engineering student, Lucia Simamane, who resides in the area said she had to change the way she dressed when going out because of the comments she usually gets from the sex workers.
“I love wearing short skirts and pants because that is my style, but I had to change my style because the prostitute said I was trying to steal their clients and I should change how I dress if I don’t want any trouble. I am an engineering student and would never do their kind of work, not because I am judging what they do, as I have different aspirations than that,” Said Simamane.
Another student, 19-year-old, Anitha Mhlongo said she is considering moving to another area because she afraid of going out.
“I moved here because the area is close to campus and the rent is really affordable, so I thought I was going to able to save money. However, I am really considering moving to Musgrave because it is much safer even though it a bit expensive. I can’t live in an area where I fear going out because of what might happen to me. It not safe anywhere in South Africa I know, but there are better places.”
19 year old male student, Masonwabe Dyonase, says he also does not feel safe staying in the area because of vagrants.
“I have witnessed people getting mugged in front of me and that terrifies me. There are a lot of vagrants in the area and most of them are dangerous. You constantly live in fear because you don’t know if they might break in to your home or do something that might harm you,” Said Dyonase.
He added that something should be done about the levels of vagrants and prostitutes in the area.
