TEMPERS FLARE OVER NETA PENSION CARDS

Many pensioners from the area of Newlands East in Durban are unhappy with the new implementation by the Newlands East Taxi Association.
Pensioners have to now register with the association in order to receive a card, which will permit them to continue to pay R8 in the Newlands taxis.
Plans for the new card have been in the pipeline for approximately two years.
The implementation came about as a result of the ongoing tension between pensioners and members of the association, with some pensioners being displeased when asked to verify their age.
The three-day registration process took place outside Shoprite in Newlands.
The registration fee of R30 bothered some of the pensioners who felt that there did not need to be a fee to obtain the card.
“I don’t feel good about it. It’s too much money spent,” said Edward Kinsley, a local pensioner.
“The R30 came about for the cost of the card and to have it delivered door to door. the card is not something that will last two-three months,” explained the association vice secretary, Bruce Gater.
Some elderly people refused to pay the fee and went on to disclose the “ill-treatment” which they received from some members of the association. The elderly complained of rude taxi drivers and conductors who speak to them anyhow.
A conductor, Keagan Randall, shed light on the issue.
“It’s not all of us,” he said. “Also, it’s a 50/50. To earn respect, you’ve got to give respect,” added Randall.
Not all pensioners were displeased though, some took the process pleasantly as many provided the association with positive reviews.
Despite the controversy surrounding the implementation, a local driver claimed that only Newlands East and Wentworth cater for pensioners. He also said that the implementation was for the community.
Although the discount is for pensioners, it is for unemployed Newlands pensioners only.
The association will look into sponsorship for the cards and keep registrations open in order to accommodate all the elderly of the community.
The pensioners will be informed once the cards are ready and the association will have them delivered
