The great Flag debacle
According to the Department the plan was to build a 100m flagpole at the Freedom Park in Pretoria and the flag was going to light up at night. In an interview with eNCA Minister of Sports Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa said this project was going to serve as an educational purpose and further saying he was sure that this initiative would bring about job opportunities in the metal industry.

South African social media users users didn’t take this lightly and took to Twitter to express their disappointment and frustrations with the South African government and Nathi Mthethwa. A tweet that sparked more controversy around the issue was a tweet by radio personality /television presenter, Bonang Matheba.
Matheba tweeted, ‘You’re useless and we all hate you @NathiMthethwaSA’ . Many South Africans backed Matheba, saying that during Lockdown in 2020 artists in South Africa were without income because they couldn’t work, but the South African Government did not raise any funds for artist.

Other Twitter users complained that the money set for the flag project, could be used for other , more pressing projects, since South Africa has a vast number of socio-economic issues, such as poverty and inadequate public services.
@Mhayise_sedana tweeted ‘I think that the flag must vote for ANC in 2024, how many RDP houses can you build with R22 million?’
The President Cyril Ramaphosa, has since put the matter to rest. Speaking at the business Council gala dinner on Thursday, Ramaphosa said he has advised the Minister of Sport, Arts and culture to cancel the plans for the flag saying, “It’s a wonderful project, shelve it, we will see it once our economy is flying!’’
