Umlazi teenager becomes a drug a addict
A teenager from Umlazi, E section has become a drug addict after smoking weed mixed with methamphetamine ‘tik’ assuming it was weed.
Thobani Shezi, a grade 10 learner said he has been facing emotional struggles for weeks and resorted to smoking weed as a coping mechanism. Thobani added that he had a regular weed supplier but eventually the supplier sold him weed mixed with other drugs.
“As a teenager I have been facing a lot of challenges from school and at home. Since I had issues I was easily influenced into smoking and it became an escape from my problems,” said Thobani.
He added that he made a purchase from the supplier again and went to smoke with a friend and it was his friend that told him that the weed was mixed with tik.
“It has become impossible for me to not smoke every day. If I don’t have enough money I borrow money from a friend,” said Thobani.
Nombuso Shezi, Thobani’s mother said she noticed behavioural changes from her son for a few weeks and became concerned.
“As a parent I was able to notice behavioural changes from my son. He started avoiding eye contact, has bloodshot eyes, frequently hungry and his clothes often have the smell of smoke,” said Nombuso.
Thobani added that after smoking he has temporary memory loss, frequent hunger and a lack of concentration.
“Due to the negative effects of the drugs I have been experiencing I am considering going to rehab,” said Thobani.
