Wentworth community living in fear due to crime
Wentworth community members are living in fear due to the high rate of crime in the area.
Donell Fredericks, a resident of Wentworth for 12 years said she constantly fears being in the streets because gang violence tends to negatively affect innocent community members in the crossfire.
Donell said gang stabbing and shootings are the most common crimes negatively affecting the community.
“There is an increase in the number of drive-by shootings in the area that are mostly related to gang violence. As community members we do not feel safe on the road as the incidents instill fear in the innocent residents,” said Donell.
Sibonelo Msweli, a Wentworth police officer said in order to overcome crime the community members need to unite and stand in solidarity against crime.
“Many people that have witnessed a tragic shooting before in the area do not share or report the incident because they live in fear,” said Msweli.
Donell said that additional police should be allocated to patrol the area so that community members can feel safe.
“As parents we also live in fear that our children will have role models that are gang members and eventually they will get involved in violent actions. We have seen children join gangs and it is devastating,” said Donell.
